What is car insurance?

New Zealanders love their cars! However, every time you drive without car insurance you are taking a risk. Even if you’re not doing anything dangerous while driving, things could and do happen, and result in huge costs. That’s why having car insurance is so important.

Car insurance is designed to protect you against financial loss if something unexpected happens to your car. Generally, there are three types of car insurance, and it pays to know the difference so you only buy exactly what you need and save money.

What are the types of car insurances?

There are three levels of car insurance cover in which to choose from.

Third Party Car Insurance

Third party is usually the cheapest option, and it covers you for your legal liability if you cause an accident while driving and damage someone else’s car or property. However, your own car or any damage to your own property is not covered. Third party best suits people who have low-value cars and are willing to repair or replace their own cars.

THIRD PARTY, FIRE and THEFT

Third party, fire and theft is similar to third party, but extends to cover your car in the case of loss or damage by fire or theft. This type of insurance is ideal if you are on a budget and the value of your vehicle isn’t high, but you don’t want the inconvenience and costs of repairing your car or purchasing a new car if it is stolen or damaged by fire.

COMPREHENSIVE INSURANCE

Comprehensive car insurance keeps you fully protected. More specifically, it covers accidental damage to your car and other cars and any property, and some of the comprehensive insurance policies also cover theft, fire, as well as events like vandalism and storm damage.
